Something to ‘B’ thankful for
So I got my Image and Sound assignment back.
You know, the one which I handed in on Friday after the deadline?
The assignment which would sit in the submission box until Monday because the tower wasn’t open over the weekend?
The assignment which would surely have been deducted three marks as it was technically handed in 3 days late? (you go down from a B to B-, A+ to A etc for every day it was handed in late. So Friday, Saturday, Sunday, MONDAY.)
The assignment which was worth 30% of my paper?
So I got my Image and Sound essay back.
I’ll explain the assignment first.
Two parts.
10% was a simply watching a clip they gave us and correctly writing down the first five shots as well as the dialogue and all other elements within that frame.
Dead. Easy.
20% was an 800 word essay analysis on the mise-en-scene of that clip.
To be frank. I rushed it. It was a decent alright essay for one done in 3 hours.
But not amazing.
So Hillie you say, why did you hand it in late if all you had to do was analyse the first five shots of a clip and then write an essay on the mise-en-scene behind it which was obviously do-able in 3 hours?
Because I’m a stupid girl. I knew it was a piss easy assignment. I mean c’mon, 800 word essay? I knew I could finish it really easily and quickly so I didn’t start on it until the day it was due.
And lo and behold, it took a little bit longer then expected. Half an hour to be exact.
So I really have no excuse.
Back to my fascinating story.
So I got my Image and Sound assignment back.
You could imagine how freaking nervous I was waiting for my mark.
I mean the first bit of the assignment was alright, but the essay wasn’t AMAZEBALLS so 1 average essay - 3 marks off for handing it in late = IDIDN’TWANTTOTHINKABOUTIT.
Heh. Hands up if you read that last word as TIT.
I KNOW YOU DID. STOP LYING AND PUT YOUR HAND UP.
I got a B.
I could not Believe it.
At the top of my assignment, circled and written in pencil was “no deduction”
Thank you oh merciful God. But this came with a price.
That piss easy part one 10% component?
Turns out I accidentally skipped two shots so I screwed the order up and ended up getting a C.
My rushed essay? I GOT AN A- LIKE A BOSS. I was so stoked. My first ever grade that made it into the A grade. I was actually so happy I got an A-.
Oh the irony.
The easy part I screwed up. And the rushed essay gave me my best mark yet of this year.
I feel like the G man upstairs was giving me a little nudge. I feel like he’s saying “Hey Hillie. Yeah. I am a merciful God. I wrote “no deduction” on your page. Congrats on the A- by the way. But you were a silly silly girl for leaving it late so here’s a C. Let this be a gentle reminder that everything you do should glorify me. Don’t let this happen again okay? So here. *hands me a B*”

It’s like a sandwich.
GOOD no deduction
BAD got a C.
GOOD got an A-
